It's one of the oldest names for the goaltender position.... Been in use since the mid 1800's, according to most hockey historians I've read...

I have to believe that. I did not know of another word but "goaler" until
a few years ago when someone annoyed with my use of the word "goaler"
in the context of other sports finally corrected me. The word is even
used in Quebecois slang.

I've noticed people use the term goaler. What's the difference between
>goalie and goaler?

No difference. Obviously you haven't been reading this group lately. There
was a big controversy as to whether or not "goaler" is correct. It is.
