We are still 2 generations away from things settling down. If you NEED flat panel, plasma is likely the best bet right now. But if you are going to be 10' plus away from it and don't really need it to be flat, take a look at the Hitachi LCD rear projection sets 50, 60 or 70 vs810). They are a good bit larger for a lot less money and are still less than 2' deep and fit nicely on the shelf where the old tube TV sat.
