I have a cousin who's a cop. I asked him once about this sort of thing and what would happen if I took a baseball bat to a burglar. His answer was I'd be ok if I just used it to drop him and call the cops. If, on the other hand, I dropped him and kept beating him I would go to jail. The idea is not to use exesive force.
