I could not imagine living without my children. I understand the decision that you are making. Just be sure to stand your ground with the ex wifey.
As a woman, I could see a little deception hiding behind those promises... however, I would probably do the same thing you are just to be close to my kids. Congrats, and I really hope things work out for you and your family.
