This "drink 8 x 8oz glasses of water a day" to remain healthy fad is exactly that: a fad. There's no evidence to suggest that it's necessary; indeed, the only measurable health benefit is the increased amount of exercise that you'll get from your frequent visits to the khazi.
The human body will tell you when it needs water. You'll feel thirsty. It's evolved this mechanism over aeons.
Drinking too much water can be positively bad for you. Google for Leah Betts or hyponatraemia for more information.
Lastly, there's no evidence to suggest that drinking caffeinated drinks - tea or coffee - or weak alcoholic beverages - beer - do not serve to help hydrate the body [another part of the myth], so I'm off for a cup of tea.
