Although not stated as such in the film, V.I.K.I's behavior follows what Asimov called the "Zeroth Law of Robotics" which states that a robot may not injure humanity, or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm. This fourth law was put into practice in Asimov"s novel "Robots and Empire" by the mind-reading robot R. Giskard Reventlov and the android R. Daneel Olivaw.
