What I did was go to the USPTO at
www.uspto.gov and applied for a provisional patent as a "Small Entity" status, since it was only around $80 and afforded me a year of limited protection from the date of filing to file a full patent if the idea I had fleshed out. Your application when you file a provisional/limited patent is not judged on its merits at all but at least you have the legal protection that it is on file and patent-pending status until you are ready to commit the $10K or more to file the full patent with an attorney.
