Women protesters at Bush event convicted
By Associated Press
December 22, 2004
Cedar Rapids, Ia. - Two women who protested at a campaign rally for President Bush in September were convicted of interfering with official acts.
A Linn County jury deliberated only 20 minutes Monday before returning their verdict.
Hodna "Pi" Nuernberg, 21, and Candida Pagan, 22, both college students from Iowa City, were dressed as trees when they were stopped by an Iowa State Patrol trooper as they left an area set up for protesters.
The trooper gave them multiple chances to return to the protest zone, Assistant Linn County Attorney Troy Powell said.
The women left the designated protest area to ask neighbors for a drink of water, said the women's attorney, James Larew of Iowa City. [b]"How can a citizen walking on a public street be trespassing?"[.b]
Powell said the verdict should tell people that they have the right to protest, but if they want to get arrested, they should be willing to accept the consequences.
Sentencing has been set for Jan. 21.
Powell said he expects the judge to give both women a deferred judgment, which means the incident will be removed from their records if they stay out of trouble for a designated period of time.
Similar charges were dropped against Christine Nelson, Alice McCabe and Alex Wyrick, who also were arrested at the Sept. 3 Bush rally at Noelridge Park.
