Spousal abuse is treated seriously by the military. They receive counseling...both parties. If the abuse continues they are punished...and are often given a General Discharge under less than honorable conditions. They may not be punished in like fashion as civilians...but they are punished. Spousal abuse can cost one his career.
The reasons for a higher percentage of spousal abuse among military personel are multiple. Soldiers unknowingly marry a slut...but they also sometimes knowingly marry a slut...thinking that there love for them will keep them faithful. They find them in the many bars and strip clubs that permeate service towns.
Husbands are away from home as often if not more so than they are at home. Young wives...become bored...and go out to play. When the husbands return and learn about their wives activities they retaliate with anger/verbal/physical abuse.
It is really a quite a spectacle to see a unit deploy and then see the wives hit the E-Clubs and or downtown bars. One can always judge when a unit is deployed by the increase of women in the E-Clubs and bars.
