Protein is important, but it's not the most important thing. You need glycogen to do anaerobic work, which comes from carbs. You need plenty of water so that your joints have enough fluid to lubricate with and your blood is thin enough to move around easily. If you're dehydrated your blood thickens and that's not good for doing stuff.

Point is, I don't think any one nutrient can be said to be the most important nutrient.
