one of the problems of the affiliate business model is content saturation and diminishing returns.
by that i mean, the population of world wankers is fairly static---and it is only possible to produce a certain amount of new original content over a given period of time.
so the big player produces the content, uses the affiliate system to promote, exposes the content in a very broad way, and satiates the market.
unlike other things once a wanker has seen something, and splashed his load from it, it no longer is so valuable.
so the big player, creates content, gives away half his profit, and then immediately does the cycle over again---like a dog chasing it's tail.
some smaller volume boutique type niche paysites have no affiliates at all, keep all the signup money, and have a very high ROI; part of this is due to relatively low market saturation, and a longer shelf life for the content.

You make some good points but don't forget literally millions of guys turn 18 every day. So when one 'wanker' has surfed around and had enough of porn, there's another turning 18 ready to replace him.
At the moment most people over 50 don't even know how to surf for porn. In 20/30 years time people like us will be the over 50s and the under 50s will be computer literate, so EVERY age group will be a porn consumer!
Plus not everyone is online yet - when the whole world has got broadband our market will be bigger.
So I don't think oversaturation is such a problem, there are plenty of fresh wankers to sell porn too.
