Here's some practical advice that has worked for me.
- Buy your wife a mini-van. The bigger the better. One with sliding doors on both sides. There will be so much stuff to haul around (strollers, etc.) it will make life real easy. I bought my wife a Grand Caravan because it was the biggest one made.
- Get a carseat that snaps into a base in the car and the stroller. That way when the baby is sleeping you can just pick up the carseat from the car and snap it onto the stroller. It also speeds up unloading and loading the baby when in a parking lot.
- Bring the carseat into the hospital room and adjust the straps BEFORE taking the baby outside. I adjusted the straps on the carseat using the instructions (without the baby in it - based on weight) only to wind up spending 45 minutes in the parking outside the hospital having to re-adjust them with the baby in the carseat.
- If your wife is breast feeding, go ahead and spend some money on a lactation consultant. You would be surprised on what you don't know and how much easier it will make life. Plus you get to watch another women fondle your wife.
- Buy a bottle warmer that plugs into a cigarette lighter. It can warm up both formula and bottled breast milk. It has saved our lives in traffic jams when the little guy was hungry.
I'll post more as I think of things that worked for us.
Congrats,
Grinder
