Before that, it was ephedrine, but that is all but illegal now.
It's an epidemic because it's illegal. I have little doubt that if meth was legal, meth labs would disappear and meth would become something kind of like coffee, cheap, plentiful and generally moderately used. Of course, this is if we didn't carry on the taboo as well.
