Can a teacher and a student be lovers? How about a psychiatrist and a patient? Leaving aside the issues of fiduciary and law, there are inherent inequalities in these relationships which places great burdens on the parties.
The same may be true for friendships between poor people and rich people. The poor are inherently needy. The poor people can't pay, so their friends need to pay for them if they go on a trip or go out to eat.
All that said, I think they can be friends; it just takes extra enlightenment and effort to overcome a money gap burden.
