I posted this in other threads about nukes:

These current media reports represent absoultely nothing new. We have had contingency plans to use nukes against various countries since 1945. All that is taking place is a review of those plans, as is done and has been done since 1945. I can assure you that there are many more countries on the list at any given point in time (including current allies). Our plans are not static and do come under review, periodically. Nations are added from time to time, but any country that could ever pose a serious threat (including current allies), are never removed from the plans.

What the media reports is sometimes not even true, for various reasons, including the fact that some government source has intentionally leaked misinformation.

As for us using nukes, we would positively use nukes, given the right cirumstances. Nukes were considered in the Korean conflict, as well as the Vietnam conflict, and as well as prior to actually beginning operation Desert Storm, and were probably considered prior to the current engagement in Afghanistan.

And This:

I did not make the statement to make anyone feel better. I don't know how old some of you are or what kind of bubble you live in but this is a real world, with real problems, and today's allies, could be tomorrows enemy and not to have contingency plans for anyone (current allies included) that could seriously damgage us now or in the future is simply foolish. To repeat we have had contingency plans since 1945 and those plans are periodically reviewed. So there is nothing new here other than the media making a big deal of it. Maybe some of you are young enough to have never heard about such plans, or had never given it any thought, but contingency plans are just that. Plans do not make for immediate implementation.
