The ceremony, also called "seppuku", is actually using a tanto and cutting from left to right in the belly, and THEN up to the chest if the samurai can muster it. His "second" would be there to behead him with a sword before he falls. I don't believe it has anything to do with Japanese fighter pilots, since disembowelment is integral in the ritual. I could be wrong, though.
