Unfortunately, the ICRC and the Red Cross Society of Côte d?Ivoire were unable to fully meet the need for first aid since they could begin working only late on Sunday morning, when Red Cross volunteers took some 50 victims from overcrowded medical posts to better equipped hospitals. They supplied hospitals with enough medicines and bandages to treat 150 seriously injured people.
The inability of the Red Cross to swing into action was due both to the scale of the violence, which largely prevented first-aid workers from going in safety where they were needed, and the stance of groups involved in the fighting ? the ?Force Licorne? and the ?Jeunes Patriotes? ? who showed little willingness in the heat of the moment to facilitate humanitarian work. The ICRC expressed its concern about this to the parties involved. After it had made these representations and received assurances that the red cross emblem would be respected, Red Cross volunteers were able to deploy in the city and today are continuing to help the injured.
