Actually in a longer version of the incident shown on CNN tonight I noticed that when entering the area the Marines asked two questions:
(1) Had the people inside had been shot?
answered: Yes.
(2) Had they been unarmed?
unanswered. (or at least inaudible)
This could be an example of "the fog of war" spoken about, it would seem that the Marine may have believed the prisoners were freshly captured having been shot, and had not been frisked for arms.
No excuses, however I have never seen War, nor my friends killed, or felt the confusion War zones cause, I find it hard to believe a soldier, American or otherwise would execute a person on film unless they felt it was justifiable force.
