You can question our economic and political strategy all day, but your own incessant whining is what ultimately defeats your own argument.
Namely, the US sneezes, you catch the cold. The fact of the matter is, as you so eloquently stated, Bush can simply do anything he wants (sort of), but more to the point, the US can do anything it wants because ultimately, our decisions good or bad, can destroy your industries in a heartbeat.
