No, they are cheaper for two reasons.
1) Drugs that are still under patent are regulated by the federal Patented Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB). This Board establishes the maximum prices that can be charged in Canada for patented drugs.
2) Health insurers negotiate prices based on evaluations of clinical effectiveness of prescription drugs. They negotiate with manufacturers in order to get the best price among therapeutically similar drugs.
