Key west is called the Conch Republic because they seceded from the US in the 80's
They blocked off US1 and would not let anyone in unless they lived on the island. They faxed papers to DC declaring war on the US. 30 minutes later they faxed papers giving up and stated that they were laying down their arms.
And asked for a billion in foreign aid.
Which they got.
