Well I got the new Sony HDR-FX1 a couple of days ago, and its just blown the opposition out of the water.
In the local store, I had the HDR-FX1, a Panasonic AG-DVX100a, Sony PD170 and a Canon XL1S all hooked up.
There was just no comparison. The new HDR-FX1 was just miles ahead. We had a 50 in High Def plasma hooked up and it was like looking out of the indow. Crystal clear. Perfect. Stunning. And true 16/9 as well.
Professionals are now comparing the HDR-FX1 picture quality to $100,000 Sony HDCAM and a $100,000 Pansonic Varicam.
I have played about with it in my garden so far and it's true to say I have never ever seen anything like it.
If you are considering buying a new camcorder, there is really no other choice at the moment IMO.
It costs a small $3700.
