Yo, never forget who we're selling to... Webmasters or surfers?
If we're just talking about simple designs vs. advanced ones:
The simple designs cause less confusion for the less web-savvy surfers and gets
"the message" through better in many cases.
Of course... TOO simple can mean confusion as well though.
