"It began with Andrew Jackson who adopted the slogan "Let the people rule." Republicans thought that was a silly concept then. They still do.
But Jackson turned it to his advantage, and it came to represent his stubbornness and willingness to stick by his principles.
Republicans have as a mascot the elephant, q creature Adlai Stevenson described as one that has "a thick skin, a head full of ivory, and as everyone who has seen a circus parade knows, proceeds best by grasping the tail of its predeccessor."
It was Sam Rayburn who , unwittingly, described the main failing of the jackass - which is that "any old jackass can kick down a barn, bit it takes a carpenter to build one."
For the entire history of our party, Democrats have been not only jackasses but carpenters. We're not afraid to kick down a bad idea or two, but we've also been relentless in our commitment to build a better America.
- James Carville "Had Enough? A Handbook For Fighting Back"
So basically Democrats fight and kick and scream to build a better America and Republicans go around grabbing each others tails.
