it's nothing to do with demand, it's to do with taxation. it's a sort of enviromental tax (or that's the excuse), the theory being that higher prices reduce demand, and help the enviroment. about 80% of the price of petrol in the UK is tax.
it would be a good thing for the envorment if the US were charged the same for petrol as in europe, and then people would start driving efficient 2 litre cars instead of 5 litre gas guzzlers.
