I only read about half the thread (in a hurry), so hopefully I'm not repeating something that's already been said... but it's a legitimate point, I think...
Whether you consider a full post on a message board advertising your product spam or not, there's another thing you need to consider:
If you're pissing off the very people you're trying to market to, then that's bad marketing. PR and marketing have to coincide with one another, and part of PR is tact.
