That comes down to Roddenberry versus Lucas. I'd have to say Roddenberry. This was a mature visionary/writer who understood that the transcendence of the human species lay in the greater tolerance of difference and in our capacity for empathy across traditional lines of segregation. Lucas is a black and white boy scout, by comparison, who can't tell a moral crisis from a hole in the head.
