Okay, so here is just a theory I heard once. The virus that causes aids is millions of years old. It has been lying dormant in the rain forests of Africa. In the mid 70's several African governments decided to tear down a path through the rainforest to build the Kinsasha highway. In the process they released not just AIDS, but Marstens, and Ebola as well. So the theory is that it is a matter of nature reacting violently to an onslaught to protect the ecological balance.
