My situation is very similar - I grew up with absolutely nothing. Well actually, many of the essentials. Food, decent clothes, even had video game system, etc. Things weren't "that bad" in regard to materialistic objects. I had my share of toys. BUT - It was in the dirtiest, grimiest New Jersey housing project around. Roaches in my cereal, etc. I mean, talk about not having a chance, I was a born loser. No father, mom on welfare/sharing apartment with my grandmother, to a mother with a drug problem (who eventually died from it).

From there, it escalated - Bad in school, bad attitude (which I carry to this day), etc - I dropped out, got my own place at 16. The typical knucklehead, attempting to go against the system. But, throughout all this - I always had the presence of mind, to know, I had something inside. A determination that would allow me to eventually, one day, find my niche - And exploit it. Sure enough it happend - It wasn't as easy as "hey submit galleries", "start a TGP". My road to (semi) riches was a lot more complicated. Involved no adult, and mostly mainstream (web development/acquisitions/sales) - Work my way from the bottom, save every dollar, and continually reinvest in myself.

Point being I was doubted by everyone, family and teachers. When you've nothing, and the odds are stacked countlessly against you? You've one goal in this world. Not the lexus, not the mansion. It extends emotionally, much further. To prove everyone who doubted you wrong. And when you do? It is so fucking refreshing, to look back in retrospect, on what you lacked. Hereinafter, what you've achieved. The satisaction/genuine gratification that subdues your body is unexplainable.

So what I could have said in a few sentences is - You cannot blame a man, for dwelling on his fruits of labor. He worked hard, and made something out of nothing. Expression is one of the few luxuries we all share.
