You think Sanctions will make them rich? They were always poor and the people didn't even have healthcare and education. He won the hearts of the poor and fought with them to exile all the corrupt government that was running Cuba.
They then depended on the Sovs but that didn't last too long. As least he didn't pocket all the money like Fulgencio Batista.
