My ex-husband is in this business (Gold's, not Curves) and someone approached him about opening one a few years ago. Before Gold's he had looked at World, Powerhouse, and a few others. He hired the same people to do the market analysis for Curves and they said the population, income, etc. would easily be enough to support it. He ended up passing on it because of some of their crazy rules/requirements, plus there's already a women's only room in the Gold's.
Another lady who owned an aerobics studio eventually opened one about 2 years ago in the same place he was looking at. She's about to close it down now because it's not making any money. I think most of the women like the Gold's better. But... I'm sure that in the right area (esp. heavily populated) that it could do well. Look at how many other gyms are within a few miles and see which ones have women only accommodations.
