...right on the spot here, but it's not about the Pendulum, it's about Semiotics, more precisely about The Name of The Rose, the first novel that Eco wrote as an example of his Semiotics Theory applied in "mundane" books, a nice invention that permits a writer to write for ALL the tastes, the First Lever readers, as Eco teaches, will be happy to read the "crimes and cops" story, but the most elevated readers, those who won't buy Stephen King for instance, have theyr share of art, philosophy, and so on...
