So... people who agree with you are sweet and classy and people who disagree with you are losers with puny brains? Is it possible - just possibe, mind you - that you're wrong, here? You claim to have spent years rescuing dogs but you handled this situation like a casual pet owner who got tired of the responsibility. I have had literally hundreds of dogs, cats and birds in my life and they are like members of the family. One thing I know is that you don't have beloved family members whacked just because they are becoming inconvenient.
There are always alternatives. I noticed your little story did not include anything about professional animal training or behavioral modification of any kind. You also don't seem to seriously consider relocation for the animal.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sorry you lost a friend and I'm sure you're genuinely sad about the decision you felt you had to make but I think your post would have been a lot longer if you had really exhausted your other options before having your dog put down.
