This is an area where most of my collegues and professors are absolutely furious. Over prescription of drugs to take place of underparenting.
Granted, there are some children and adults who actually NEED the help of drugs, but the number is far less than is thought. In the Unites States, there are over 60 million adults on some form of medicinal therapy. Statistically, 5 out of every 1000 kids are on drugs of this type.
Most of the time, these kids just need behavioral modification or dietary changes to get back on track. But a lot of parents just don't have the time to deal with it; they're working or in classes or something something something. It's just easier to give the kids drugs and send them on their way. And that's sad.
