Damn, I spent almost a year learning Studio Max back when I was hoping to pursue a career in gaming. I decided as much as I enjoyed art it made me rely too much on other people.

Originally 3DMax was the choice of game developers, but it is shifting over to Maya. New game engine such as the one used for Doom 3 rely heavily on bump mapping and other new technology which mean you basically have to make a high-resolution model (just like in 3D animated movies.) 3DMax sucks for high-poly organic modelling.

Some people think that 3D art is "cheating" because "the computer does all the work." Let me tell you, I've painted, sculpted, drawn, etc. 3D modelling is by far the hardest of them all. Photoshop is like a coloring book compared to this shit. (If you are really going for the photo-realistic look, especially with people.)

Now, if you just want to dabble in it without putting in all the work, try a program like Poser. Thats just barbie dolls.
