This is the preferred route. The "cheaper" route is to use common law protection of "prior mark" to protect you--ie., if you had the mark before the other guys but you did not register. You get protection but it gets EXPENSIVE once you actually have to enforce your rights. You have to go to court [read: EXPENSIVE] to get a declaratory judgment .
