You did the right thing. Yell at the other dog loudly to stop and if all else fails boot the shit out of it. If your dog is deep into a fight as a last resort you may have to let go of the lead to give him a fair chance. They can't defend themselves well when your trying to pull them back. The down side to that is the other owner can say you didnt have the lead when the fight started.
Im glad I have 2 Rotts that square up and let out huge ass barks when another dog approaches. Keeps that sort of bullshit from happening to me.
