It's also a bad idea to talk about something you've heard summed up in the media -- the assault weapon ban was only restrictions on 'cosmetic' issues of an assault weapon, banning combinations of elements like:
pistol grip, telescopic stock, bayonet fitting, suppressor threading.
if you think that somehow a weapon is more deadly if it is an M-16/A2 rifle with a telescopic stock, or one with a solid stock, or it has a bayonet holder, or suppressor fitting please stop reading.
If that wasn't stupid enough, you could still purchase a weapon that had combinations of the above elements legally, if it was made before the ban date.
so to recap, the assault weapon ban was in reality a ban on how a weapon could, or couldn't look? feel safer?
