1) Majority of people don't follow politics so they are uninformed or apathetic
2) The minority that follow politics think that you have to be in one camp or the other (a lot has to do with polarized right/left media)
3) Once set into a party line, people don't like to change. They feel it undermines their intelligence if they admit to being wrong (they think people will think they're stupid or unprincipled).
4) Many people idolize and bow to authority figures and will believe anything the authority figure "on their side" says. "The President is right, he has to be, because he's the President and our country doesn't do bad things!"
