I think one of the main reasons is that many people are simply sheep. They go to work, come home, eat dinner and watch TV until they go to bed. They don't watch the news or read the papers they don't ask questions. They see the president or some other politician tell them something and they belive it and don't ever look into it for themselves. Also I think it's because people want to belive things are true.
They hear or read something and then filter it through their brain and say that the information supports their view even if it doesn't but because they want to belive it does they allow themselves to see it that way.

For example the war in Iraq. Just the other day I was talking to some friends of mine about it and one friend said " we should support the president even if we don't agree with him and shouldn't question him in a time a war." I said " If we don't question him during a war doesn't that encourage him to be at war. Also, our job is pick the leaders that will do as we want them to so if the guy is doing something you don't like you should question him and if need be elect someone new."

another friend said " we couldn't wait on going into Iraq. What were we supposed to do just sit there and let them attack us again." when I pointed out that even now the bush adminstration is saying that the saddam had no connection to 9/11 and that they have no weapons and were not a threat." she was shocked and didn't belive me until I showed her the dozens of articles showing this.

I'm not meaning this a bush bashing post but those are just two examples of how people see or hear something and then never investigate it for themselves and then allow them selves to be led around like a herd animal.
