I did that one time. A neighbor's chow (looks like a bear cub) used to come down the lane about once a week and root through my garbage, making a mess all over my driveway.... then squat down and take a big dump and leave. I caught that dog right in the act one time, and took a couple of shots at it from my bathroom window with my old pellet pistol, a dirty harry 44 mag replica..... snapped it in the ass twice, it let out a fucking howl and took off.
And it never did fuck with my yard again.
