Think "non-electric." My time in Nam proved that things that need batteries lack a source of continued power sources.

Think "basic." Things that you and I take for granted, they think of as "gold." Also, it must be small enough to "carry" since one may not be "rear eschlon." A 1 pound device may not seem like much.....unless you're also humping a 80-90 pound pack!

Also, little cheapie trinkets that one can hand out to the locals to "make friends." These come in real handy when you need to establish a "contact."

A local newspaper once in a while is GREAT!

And, as a last resort, why not just write him and ask him what his basic, on-location needs are.

Finally, the absolute best thing to do is, once a month, send a box of home-made cookies. You have absolutely no idea how utterly wonderful it is to receive a box filled with crumbly cookies from home. I shit you NOT!
