I use on in my home to listen to the local fire department as I used to be a fireman some years ago.
Keep in mind that using a police scanner in your vehicle is illegal in most states.
Also keep in mind that frequencies also change through county, state, and local jurisdictions. To me it would be pointless to have it. You would be better with a radar detector. Otherwise you would have one of the $150 bearcat scanners that just scans the "known" police frequencies which is quite large and you would miss the calls anyway. Not to mention you need a better scanner to pick up some of the newer trunked radios the state guys use.
IMHO it would be pretty pointless for you to get one.
EDIT: Unless you are only using it for when you get to your destination. While traveling it is pointless. If so you can look up frequencies online for your destination most likely, but unless you get a nice one you still wont get the trunked frequencies.
