A man who walked into a home licensed day-care center on Detroit's west side Tuesday morning and started shooting is being sought by police, according to Local 4 reports.

Detroit police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings said three adults and four children were in the home at the time of the shooting. Two adults -- ages 41 and 22 -- and a 3-year-old girl were listed in critical condition. There were conflicting reports that one of the victims died, according to Local 4.

The man asked if the home -- located in the 19000 block of Woodbine Street, near Seven Mile and Telegraph roads -- was a day-care center, and then started firing shots at about 9:30 a.m., police said.

"Right now what we have is a description of a black male that came to this address. Some words were exchanged. Shots were fired," said Bully-Cummings.

A 7-month-old child reportedly suffered injuries after being dropped from the arms of an adult. The infant was listed in serious condition, according to the station's report.

Local 4 has learned that the adults were taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital and the children were taken to Children's Hospital of Michigan.

Two other children were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

A stretch of Woodbine Street remains closed while Detroit police and Michigan State Police investigate at the scene. Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Bully-Cummings also remain at the scene.

"It appears as though this was not random," said Bully-Cummings. "We don't have any specific information right now."

A K-9 unit is assisting in the search for the shooter, who Bully-Cummings described as a black man in his 20s, about 6 feet tall, between 200 and 230 pounds, wearing dark clothing, and carrying a blue, steel semiautomatic weapon.

A school located nearby was on lockdown as a precaution, but it has since been lifted, the station reported.

The day-care center is licensed by the state to care for up to 12 children, according to Local 4. The home belonged to the 41-year-old woman who was shot, Bully-Cummings said.

Anyone with information on the shooting should contact Detroit police
