The basic idea behind al-Taqiyya is that it is permissible to lie about one's faith to non-muslims when one's life is in jeopardy. If some redneck holds a gun to a muslim's head, and asks him, "Are you a muslim?", the muslim is allowed to say "Hell no!" in order to save his life, as long as his actual beliefs remain unshaken.
