I'm sorry to hear about all this with your son!! My first advice is get him out of the public school. Chances are this "diagnosis" of ADHD is wrong (I don't believe such a thing exists at all...) and its easier for the teachers if the children are doped up.
I'd look at other causes... Maybe his classes aren't challenging enough for him or maybe the subject matter isn't interesting at all.
Either way, I think that what everyone has said on here (stay away from the drugs) is probably the best route....
Its funny, that when I was in school, the exact same behavior wasn't questioned..... it was almost normal.......
