1.2 Billion People Live on $1 Per Day

Just the facts . . . and quite sobering numbers.

Of the 6.4 billion people in today's world, 1.2 billion live on less than $1 per day.

Thirty-five million Americans, including 13.1 million children-live in food insecure households that experience hunger or the risk of hunger. This represents approximately 12.5 percent of the US population.

842 million people in the world are malnourished-798 million of them are from the developing world. More than 153 million of them are under the age of 5.

6 million children under the age of 5 die every year as a result of hunger.

In developing countries, 90 children out of 1,000 die before their fifth birthday. By comparison, in the United States eight children in 1,000 will die before turning five years old.

2.4 billion people do not have access to basic sanitation.

1.1 billion cannot reach safe drinking water. 1.6 million people die per year due to unsanitary conditions in their water sources.

By the end of 2000, some 22 million people had died from AIDS, which has caused 13 million children to lose either their mother or both parents.

Only 400,000 of the 6 million people in need of HIV/AIDS treatment are getting it. Every year three million people die from HIV/AIDS because they cannot access medical aid.
