 format the whole drive... during install alocate 20gigs for the o/s and all your programs.  format the remainder (in ntfs) of the drive for data and store all your data on there
 
 in a worst case scenario, your o/s takes a dump, all your data is still on a seperate partition.  this also makes life a LOT easier if you plan on keeping the drive for some time as windows likes to have a freshie install every 12 months or so... more often if your a power user/abuse
