Do you have a quicktime icon in your taskbar by the clock? Right click it and tell it to stfu..(forget the exact area, but somewhere in there you can tell it to not do things).
Try uninstalling quicktime. You can always reinstall it.
Try going to Start, Run, type msconfig, prevent quicktime from loading at startup.
I dunno.. try checking google for "quicktime playing mpg in explorer" maybe.. lots of ideas there, not sure which works, but food for thought.
