There are two sides to a coin. The US trades with Asia because they can buy shit at lower cost due to crappy labor rates.
This keeps more money in your pocket and helps keep you in the lifestyle you want.
You have a choice not to buy imported goods - but generally thats not the case.
The truth is, like several other "western" countries, the US is not a gross overall producer, but a consumer of resources - a kinda dangerous and possibly unsustainable scenario.
